Research Software Week 2026: June 1st–5th
#

About
#

2026 is the first instance of the Research Software Week. This is a prototype event and is shaped by your contributions! The event format is inspired by the international Love Data Week and Open Access Week.

The Research Software Week is an event for everybody interested in research software (engineering). In connection with the first Research Software Day Berlin & Brandenburg on 3 June 2026, this week is intended to encourage broader learning, exchange and networking around research software. The idea is to gather events around research software in one place and promote them to a larger audience. Let’s see where we can go together!

Open Code (Sharing)
#

  • Thursday June 4 10–16 part 1
  • Friday June 5 10–14 part 2

Open code - i.e., sharing code on platforms such as GitHub and similar platforms - is a central pillar of Open Science. However, a quick look at one’s own or others’ repositories often shows that simply uploading code is not enough. Missing structure, insufficient documentation, or inconsistent conventions frequently make reuse and reproducibility difficult and thus hinder the core goals of Open Science. We aim to address this. Together, we aim to develop practical code-sharing standards that promote transparency, clarity, and reusability. Step 1: Survey As a first step, we are conducting a short survey to learn more about current practices in sharing and re-using code. Duration: 5?10 minutes Target group: Anyone who has ever shared or re-used code (research area: Psychology/Neuroscience/Data Science) We would be very happy if you could participate! Here is the survey: https://www.soscisurvey.de/stand-repos-user-cent/ Step 2: Workshop (4 - 5 June 2026) Based on the survey results, we will host a 1.5-day workshop as part of the Research Software Week on 4 - 5 June in Berlin, where we will jointly develop concrete code-sharing standards.

Beyond Vibe Coding: Responsible AI-Assisted Data Analysis for Reproducible Research
#

  • Friday June 5 13–16

Generative AI is not only significantly affecting the world of software development, but also rapidly changing the way research is conducted. This online workshop offers a structured opportunity to explore both the practical use of AI-based coding tools for data analysis and the broader questions they raise for scientific integrity and responsibility. During the workshop, we will combine structured hands-on exercises with group discussions to:

  • get to know the features and limitations of the various AI-based coding assistants
  • explore how generative AI can help writing reusable, well documented and version controlled analysis code
  • discuss when AI assistance supports research and when it conflicts with good scientific practice
  • develop your own criteria for when and how to use AI-based coding tools in your research By the end of the workshop, you will be equipped to make informed and conscious decisions about how to choose and use AI-based coding assistants in your own research.

Prerequisites:

  • You should have some (at least fundamental) experience in scientific coding (e.g. in R or Python).
