1st Research Software Day Berlin/Brandenburg June 3rd 2026

Goal
#

The goal is to organize a first Berlin RS Day and embedd that into a week of events around research software to offer opportunities for

  • hands-on coding training for researchers,
  • discussing overarching topics like training institutionalisation and governance as well as
  • giving a space and visibility to various initiatives to present themselves and network for potential joint activities.

Additionally, the event shall serve as a prototype and be openly documented. In this way, potential future editions of RS days and weeks in Berlin and elsewhere can draw on the resources and adapt them to their needs.

Target Audience
#

Aim: 80 people

  • main group: researchers, PhDs, PostDocs who write code
  • professors, PIs of projects in which research software questions may arise
  • computer scientists interested in research software
  • RDM teams, data stewards and librarians who may get questions about software management
  • research managers & funding referents confronted with questions on research software
  • transfer offices and initiatives in charge of informing about software patenting

Possible Session Formats & Topic

  • Trainings: hands-on workshops on software for research, e.g. Git for project and software management, software Testing, HPC in Research, Jupyter in Research, AI Coding Assistance, digital methods in humanities and social sciences, etc.

  • RS meta topics: workshops/panels on overarching topics, e.g. FAIR for research software, Software Management Plans, code peer review, software publication & citation, software licenses, legal helpdesk, RSE as a career option, etc.

  • Networking sessions or lightning talks: Open formats for getting together and initiating or presenting initiatives related to RS

Funding

The BUA and their programs CORe and Open Science Ambassadors aim to cover the costs for the RS Day. The event is greatly supported by the de-RSE association.
